While living in Mexico City in the nineties, I had a series of setbacks which left me depressed. When I asked an ESL student of mine, who was a neurosurgeon, about my symptoms, he said, “Do you believe in God?” I said, “What does THAT have to do with my symptoms?” He responded, “Everything!” This was the impetus for my sincere search for meaning. I started reading everything I could find on psychology and spirituality, even starting a masters degree at La Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM). Through holistic approaches as well as therapy, I was able to overcome major depression, and life’s wild waves soon drew me to Cancun.
I left my studies at UNAM and taught high school students struggling with drug addiction and crises. This planted the seeds for pursuing the study of psychology. When I returned to the States at the turn of the century and got married, being a foster parent was one of the most challenging and enlightening experiences ever. Now, I guide parents (foster, adoptive and biological) as they raise their children with developmental and neurological challenges, providing holistic support to overcome overwhelm and burnout.
